Where It All Began

Housing Works Cannabis Co. at 750 Broadway remains the symbolic heart of New York's cannabis program. On December 29, 2022, at a symbolic 4:20 p.m., the nonprofit AIDS service organization made the first legal adult-use cannabis sale in state history. The store served 500 customers that evening and turned away 1,500 more. Housing Works has generated $12 million in its first six months, with all proceeds funding HIV/AIDS services, housing, and harm reduction.

• Dazed (Union Square) — A popular CAURD dispensary in one of Manhattan's highest-traffic areas.
• Just a Little Higher — Multiple Manhattan locations as part of a growing chain.

The Unlicensed Challenge

Manhattan remains ground zero for the unlicensed shop crisis. On the Lower East Side, 33 unlicensed shops once surrounded Conbud, the neighborhood's single licensed dispensary. While Operation Padlock to Protect has shuttered many, the contrast between licensed and unlicensed shops remains visible on nearly every commercial block.

To ensure you're purchasing tested, safe products, always verify a dispensary's OCM license. Licensed shops display their license prominently and their products carry lab testing results.

Getting There

Manhattan dispensaries are accessible by subway, bus, and on foot. Most are concentrated in commercial corridors from the Lower East Side through Midtown. Many offer delivery services across the borough and beyond.
